Wind Turbines

Wind turbines are supposed to "feather" in high winds so that they don't spin too fast or transmit too much torque. For some reason that didn't happen on this turbine in Denmark in February of 2008:

Tacoma Narrows Bridge

In November 1940, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which had become known as "Galloping Gertie" because of the way it swayed in the wind, collapsed. Designers did not realize the aerodynamic loading that wind would impart on the bridge. Here is newsreel coverage of the collapse (I love the spooky music):
